1998 ficht Problems

I have a 1998 Johnson J175FSLEC motor that I have a code 28(Shift assist
circuit)and a code37(water in fuel sensor). I drained the fiter into a glass
jar and didn't see any water and changed the filter and the light came back
on. I dis-connected the batteriers and to see if that would help which it
didn't the light came back on within a minute or two. I also unpluged the
wire going to the sensor and the light still came back on. One other thing
that I had someone tell me to try was to take a paper clip and put one end
into the wire and touch the other to the block and see if the light would go
off and I also ran a wire to the ground on the battery and it stayed on. I
had someone tell me they had to sent in the EMM to have it remapped. My
question is how can I make sure I have done everything I can to make sure
that this is the problem and not something else. Is there a differance
between the EMM vs ECU?

Forum: Technical Help Questions, Problems, Repair

2000 225 Ficht Surging

2000 225 Ficht started surging at 1500-2000 RPM almost 100 hrs on plugs - replaced plugs and indexed thinking problem would be fixed. Engine then began surging 800-1200 RPM without moving throttle. Re-checked indexing and gaps again, all good. Still surging. Ran about 10 mi and noticed engine beginning to surge at other RPM settings up to cruise which is 4000 RPM towards the end of the trip.

Checked fuel/water seperator, little bit of debris, not too bad but changed filters. Ran again same problem at idle -- surging 0800-1200 RPM. Checked battery terminals/connections all clean and tight.

THought about gas so put a clean fresh 6 gal tank at the filter connection and ran motor for about 15 mins. Still had problem at idle and still surging at other RPM settings while burning ~2 gallons of new clean gas. During this test, the motor REALLY started to surge without moving the throttle, this time between 2200-3000 RPM with the throttle in the idle position and running very rough. Shutdown the engine, changed fuel line back to main tank and started engine again, engine started and immediately was at 2200 RPM surging back and forth to 3000 RPM and running VERY rough.

Ideas?

Forum: Technical Help Questions, Problems, Repair

1999 Ficht 175 will not start

My 1999 Evinrude 175 had a low voltage indication on guage it was around 10.5 volts when running. I changed the battery and had 11 volts. Voltage would increase slightly when rpm was increased. I made it 23 miles offshore and was searching for bottom when I noticed the starboard engine was not running. I could not start it again. Even after engine was totally cooled off. Engine spins over fine and went to battery #2 and same problem.
I have Version 1.42 software but cannot run on my laptop which is wndows XP. I have a USB to serial convertor but found out the program must run on fat32 not ntfe.
Anybody have any ideas?
Is there a program out there Xp compatible?
Update:
I found out if you load the program on a jump drive the program will run in a fat32 format. My errows were all related to primary coil voltage. which did not help any. Swapped ecm's, capicator and found 2 year old remanufactured unit to be bad. I am wondering about the 12vdc output being low and causeing ecm failure. The manual states a code will be issued for low or high voltages which was not present on the failed unit or the unit off the other motor.
The reason I'm concerned is while running with replacement voltage guage reads 12.2 vdc. I swapped unit back, ran engine and had battery switches on same battery as first test. I have to turn the key on failed engine to see vdc and it reads 13.7 vdc on the other engine. I did a spin test on the failed engine without the ecm and only had 9.9vdc at he voltage regulator, but this was at a low rpm (starter speed). I'm going to call DFI and get ecm repaired and talk to them about low voltage.........

Forum: Technical Help Questions, Problems, Repair

1972 9.8 Merc Runing Lean When Cold

I have a 1972 Merc 110, 9.8 HP that I bought new. It runs great except if you run it out of fuel, like I always do before I tilt it out of the water, when you go to fire it up it starts but keeps stalling and is running too lean as if I choke it it will run. Priming bulb is pumped up hard and fuel pump is pumping just fine. If you run it full throttle it will run fine and after several minutes it will run great at all speeds. It's not a cold or heat probelm because if you disconnect the fuel line and run it out of fuel it acts the same way. If the motor is not run out of fuel it will fire up cold and run fine. I tried adjusting the Low Speed Jet when it's running too lean but after it's running a while it begins running too rich. A very strange problem, this winter I plan on rebuilding the carb but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Forum: Other Outboards Mercury, Suzuki, Honda...

87 120 Evinrude help......

This one has me stumped.....

This motor(1987 120Hp V4 Evinrude) starts/runs perfect on the hose(flush). Idles around 1000, and never misses a beat. Put it in the water and now we have problems. Only idles for about 5 seconds and quits.(motor is cold or hot makes no difference) Idles around 600. Won't start unless fast idle lever is up. Will run all day with fast idle up and at about 1800rpm. Motor also quits in about 5 seconds when given throttle in gear. Both in forward and reverse. (Seems like it's loading up??) If I mash on the throttle I can get the motor up on top end, but its slow and sluggish till you get there. Runs great on mid and top end. Once you back it down to idle it will again quit in a few seconds and won't start unless I use the fast idle lever. Also seems to start harder with key choke.

I assumed fuel problems.... cleaned all four carbs. and installed new OMC carb. kits. Spark plugs are nice and brown. Set the sync and link and timing/spark is right on. Still no dice. Compression tested 124-126 on all for cylinders. Pulled the heads and found nothing. A little wear, but nothing bad. Head gaskets looked good. Exhaust ports and heads are clean and carbon free.

What do you guys think? Runs great on the hose, but with back pressure it stumbles badly and won't idle long. Also this motor has never seen salt only fresh water.

Any help here would be great!

Thanks ............ Bill

Forum: Technical Help Questions, Problems, Repair
